Are Magazine Publications Still Working?

In the age of social media and video reels, magazines seemed to tumble from its once-high pedestal of the most coveted media and advertising platform. Is that true, though?

Speaking to quite a few magazine publishers and editors, hoping to get their insight on the true state of the industry I could not help but notice that they are all inspired and optimistic. And I was only happy to hear that!

As I offer photography for magazine publications, a lot of my work is related to media and advertising and I need to keep a fresh perspective on the industry. Here are some of the insights from people related to magazine publishing firsthand.

There is always a place for a great magazine on your coffee table

A few thoughts after a conversation over a cup of tea with Susy Tamazy, owner and founder of “BizFashion Magazine”, circulation: 20,000.

Q: Suzy, How do you think printed (or digital copy) of a magazine compares to the thousands of fashion accounts on social media updated daily?

S.T: Sounds scary, I know, but you have to think about it differently. Magazines are about high-quality curated content. Teams of professionals share their expertise and create incredible visuals. It is a long-lasting effect.

Over the years we also found that the readers interact with it differently. They do not scroll through. They take in every page and every image. They come back a look again. How often did you look at an Instagram post posted 2 weeks ago? A month?

Q: How does it feel to become an editor-in-chief of one of the key fashion publications in Toronto in a span of a mere 10 years?

S. T.: I didn’t think it was possible. I simply kept doing what I loved the most. Endless photoshoots, model calls, planning, and styling. It was the amazing people that I met on the way who kept me going. There was this amazing energy of collaboration. Yes, there are years of dedication, but it simply shows when you give it 100%.

Q: What did you learn from this journey?

S.T. Fashion is the industry where you have to prove yourself every season. So is photography, and so is talent. This always keeps me going.

Photography for Magazine Publications

Over the years I created a series of images for magazines – from fashion editorials to magazine features. Compared to the instantaneity of social media communication it is an entirely different process. The visuals accompany an article that tells a story. The goal of the visuals is to tell the same story but with the language of photography.

Working on projects like this challenges you to always think of the subject, what is essential, and what will highlight the story the best.

In 2023, I have done several covers for BVM media, the Neighbours of Woodbridge series – and it was a great experience! The cover is not only more challenging from the point of view of the narrative, but it simply has to attract attention to the whole magazine.

Magazines are a great way to promote your professional skills and tell your story.

Are you getting to the level when you need extra publicity? Do not forget about the industry magazines! After all, this is where most of your clients and colleagues are still checking on the industry trends!

Having a great set of images that put you right in the limelight helps if you think about it strategically.
